Manual lymph drainage is a special form of massage. Here, the very superficial lymphatics under the skin are stimulated by gentle, circular and pumping movements. The lymphatic system covers the body like a network. The lymphatic system is to be activated through various grip techniques by improving the pumping capacity of the lymphatic vessels. Accordingly, the fluid is directed to the central large lymph nodes. Lymphatic drainage is used to treat lymphedema.

The areas of application are broad. It is primarily used as edema and decongestion therapy for edematous body regions, such as the trunk and extremities (arms and legs), which can arise after trauma or surgery. This therapy is particularly often prescribed after tumor treatment or lymph node removal. The effect of MLD is based on interstitial pressure build-up, stretching, intermittent pressure and suction.
